Guam is the southernmost and largest of the Mariana Islands in Micronesia and lies about 1500 miles south-east of Tokyo, 3500 miles south-west of Hawaii and 3100 miles north-west of Sydney. The Marianas Trench, the deepest known ocean depth, is located south-east of Guam. An unincorporated territory of the United States, Guam is approximately 212 square miles in area and 30 miles long, and is an attractive resort destination with a dramatic coastline, white sand beaches ringed by coral reefs, clear, crystalline waters teeming with marine life and a balmy tropical climate.

America's gateway to the west Pacific and Asia, Guam, with its natural beauty, luxurious hotel and resort complexes at Tumon and Agana beachfronts, its numerous restaurants, shopping malls, golf courses, water sports and entertainment facilities, is a perfect playground for visitors.

The island is served by Guam International Airport (Won Pat), which is about four miles north-east of Agana and provides regular flights to Hawaii, the US, East Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Australia.

Discovered by Magellan in the 16th century, the island was then inhabited by the Chamorro people who today still make up nearly half the island's population. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, Guam has a number of shipwrecks among the reefs, some of which snorkellers and scuba-divers are permitted to dive to and observe.

With great underwater visibility and lots of coral reefs, scuba-diving is a popular pastime in Guam, as is surfing, snorkelling, deep sea fishing and windsurfing. With a number of challenging golf courses, some with gorgeous ocean views, there is plenty of choice in Guam for the golfer.

Shoppers find the best designer labels at the shopping malls and nearby is Pleasure Island, Guam's premier shopping, dining and entertainment zone. The I Sengsong Chamorro Village offers local merchandise ranging from clothes and fabrics to regional food and fruit, woodcarvings and handicrafts.
